Planning is in full swing for the Balwyn Tiger's 2008 season under coach Daniel Harford as we prepare for our Round 1 clash against Norwood (away) on Saturday April 19. Practice games include Newcombe (Geelong League) on March 29 and Montmorency (NFL) on April 5.

Numbers are good with many new recruits and most of our 2007 players retained. To help us take the next step and build our depth after finishing in the finals in our first EFL season key signings include Joel Smith (Hawthorn), Patrick Bowden (Richmond), Nick Smith (Melbourne & Box Hill Hawks) Chris Vlahov (Perth). We are still on the lookout for Under 18s available to play in the Saturday EFL comp.  Training is in full swing
Tuesdays and Thursdays at Myrtle Park, Nth Balwyn (off Severn Street) while the Balwyn Park changeroom extensions continue, and as the ground surface recovers following re-seeding with drought-tolerant grass.

HARFORD LEADS TIGERS INTO 2008

After an encouraging debut season in the Eastern Football League, Balwyn Tigers will be led by Daniel Harford in 2008 as the former Hawthorn player and popular SEN sports commentator takes over the coaching reigns from Mick McGuane.

Harford was a prime mover on the field for Balwyn this season but next year will see him play an even more important off field role with the Tigers as they look to build on fourth spot.

Balwyn President Richard Wilson announced the new appointment which came about with 2007 coach Mick McGuane looking to pursue an AFL club role.

“Daniel had a great season with us and is renowned and respected for his football smarts,” he said.

“Importantly, the 150 game Hawthorn player and SEN commentator is a local resident and his profile will be important as we work to attract the best senior and junior players from across the City of Boroondara to Balwyn Park.

“Together with the Council we are working to build the Club on many fronts both on and off field.

“This can be seen in the ground surface improvements now underway, works to start soon to upgrade our training facilities, and plans to establish a new Sunday Under 17 side, the Boroondara Bulldogs, in partnership with Canterbury JFC, Hawthorn Citizens JFC and Balwyn Juniors.

“Daniel’s appointment is the icing on the cake for us as Balwyn works to consolidate our position, providing opportunities for locals to play or watch the highest standard of football at Boroondara’s only Eastern Football League club,” Mr Wilson said.

In other club news midfielder Alan Murray won the Mick Leahy Trophy for Balwyn’s best and fairest pipping hard running onballer Nick Ries by a single vote.

James Smith won the Reserves Award with Jeremy Gillan and Jock O'Connell and Jeremy Gillan tieing for the Under 18s trophy.

Balwyn's Bets & Fairest newly named the Mick Leahy Award presented to Allan Murray by Mick himself. Allan took out the award by 1 vote in the last game to tip out Nick Ries.
